For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Interwetten brought both of them together for a social-first content series built around a simple question: what happens when someone from American football has to get ready for the biggest football tournament in the world?
Pat Patriot entered the world of the World Cup with little experience around the round ball. Lothar took on the role of the super expert: explaining, demonstrating and sometimes correcting what football means outside of the NFL context.
Super Expert Meets Super Mascot
The idea lived from the small misunderstandings between two sports that share the same words and meanings, but follow very different rules.
A penalty suddenly looked like a field goal attempt. A ball was picked up and carried like a first down. A throw-in became a reminder that using your hands is only allowed in very specific moments. And when it came to dribbling, passing or heading, Lothar had to bring Pat Patriot step by step closer to football level. Instead of explaining the game in a technical way, the format used these moments as short, visual and playful challenges. That made the content easy to understand, quick to follow and built for social media from the start.
Built Around Personality and Contrast
Across the series, both characters had a clear role.
Lothar brought the football expertise, the World Cup connection and the credibility of one of Germany’s most recognizable sports personalities. Pat Patriot brought the American football perspective, the visual presence and the curiosity that made the format feel light and entertaining. That dynamic became the center of the content. The story was not forced through a campaign message, but developed naturally through the interaction itself: a football legend, an NFL mascot and a shared attempt to understand what “football” means on both sides.
Predictions With a Purpose
To connect the series even closer to the World Cup, the challenges were combined with prediction moments from Lothar and Pat Patriot.
These oracle-style picks added another playful layer to the format and created a natural connection to Interwetten. Not through a forced brand message, but through something that is already part of every major tournament: opinions, expectations and possible outcomes.
For the community, these moments created a clear reason to react, agree, disagree and join the conversation. That made the assets not only entertaining, but also relevant beyond the initial football-versus-football joke.
Produced Fully In-House
For us at GRIT Sports, the project was also special because the complete production was handled in-house.
From planning and concept refinement to production on set, editing and post-production, every step stayed within our team.
That gave us the flexibility to move quickly, make direct decisions and keep the creative direction consistent from start to finish. This became especially important on the shoot day itself. Due to bad weather, we had to change locations on short notice. Because a Plan B had already been prepared, the switch did not affect the flow of the production.
The atmosphere on set stayed relaxed, focused and genuinely positive -— something that translated directly into the final videos. The interaction between Lothar and Pat Patriot felt playful and authentic, which gave the format exactly the tone it needed.
"Top organization and top production. Despite several last-minute challenges, the project was delivered perfectly within a very short timeframe." - Julian Zott, Interwetten
In the end, the project became another example of how sports partnerships can turn into strong social content when the idea is clear, the personalities fit and the production is built around the platform from the very beginning.
